The Snuff Box is broad rectangular in form and is engraved with an unusual decorative panel on the cover, and the base, displaying two incuse frames containing foliate scroll work and trellis designs, with raying shells in each corner. The centre displays a vacant circular laurel leaf cartouche. The sides are engraved with different foliate scroll work and trellis work designs. The front displays a chased foliate thumb piece with central Rococo shell. The area below, unusually, shows an engraved shell, copying the thumb piece above, flanked by scrolls and foliate motifs. The interior displays exceptionally fine gilding and is very well marked. This is the first time we have seen these unusual designs, especially where the chased thumb piece design is engraved below. This piece is in excellent condition, with crisp marks. It is also the first time we have seen a box coming from the workshops of Walter Williams, who occupied premises in St. Martin's Lane when this box was made.
