The Snuff Canister is of a large oval form and the sides are decorated with beautiful horizontal bands of bright cut, and prick dot, designs including stylised flower heads and herring bone pattern in ovals. Both the front and reverse display an oval bright cut cartouche, on one side containing contemporary script initials, and the other side vacant. The interior displays a central division and both compartments have a hinged cover. This is a most unusual design from any location, and was purely so that two different types of snuff could be stored and taken. The box is in excellent condition and is marked on the base with the maker's mark, Exeter Town Mark and King's head duty mark. This box was contained within the important Lion Collection of Boxes and is illustrated in the catalogue of the collection, page 192, item 211.
