The Snuff Box is oval in form and plain in design with an unusual side opening. The cover is finely engraved with the Arms of Oxford University surrounded by a garter engraved with OXON UNIV. This is all surrounded by a large cartouche of drapery mantling. The interior is gilded and displays crisp marks on the cover and in the base.
These University Snuff Boxes are extremely rare and are usually mae by Peter & William Bateman, son and grandson, of the famous Lady silversmith, Hester Bateman. The Bateman workshops did not make many snuff boxes and to find one is very rare, especially with the Arms of Oxford University engraved on the cover. It was almost certainly made for a Georgian student, or member of the academic staff, at the university. A pair of seal boxes, engraved with the same Arms, are shown in "Silver Boxes" by Eric Delieb, page 23.
Length: 3.45 inches, 8.63cm.
Width: 2.75 inches, 6.88 cm.
Weight: 0.5 inches, 1.25 cm.
