These most unusual pieces are of a large size, with deep sides and plain silver bases.  The sides are pierced and chased with trellis work and flower heads in bloom, all contained within an upper and lower reeded border.  The quality of design and production is quite exceptional.  The Coasters are in excellent condition and are fully marked on the side of the main body and with the sterling mark and maker's mark on the bases.  The Houle brothers were very fine silversmiths and produced innovative designs.  Due to their size, the coasters could also be used as baskets on the table for fruit, biscuits, sweets etc.  Most coasters have wooden bases, however silver based examples were made to supply the very top end of the market.Height: 2.7 inches, 6.75cm.Diameter: 5.45 inches, 13.63cm.
