The Basket stands on a spreading rectangular foot decorated with reeding.  The main body has a deep bowl, engraved with a contemporary shield shaped Armorial, with Crest above, Motto below and flanked by Scottish figurative supporters. The sides rise to a stepped rim which is most unusually decorated with gadrooning, reed and tie, raying shells and plam leaves.  The shaped side handles are also decorated with anthemion motifs, flanked by acanthus leaves and gadrooning.  The basket is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the top edge.

The Arms, Motto and Crest are those of Montcreiffe of Tulliebole, for the Reverend Sir Henry Moncrieffe, later Wellwood-Moncrieffe, 8th Baronet of Tulliebole, FRSE (1750-1827).  He was educated at Glasgow University and later became minister of Blackford in 1771 and St. Cuthbert's in 1775.  He was moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1785 and appointed Chaplain to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1785.  He married Susan Robertson in 1772, daughter of James Robertson Barclay.  The 11th Baronet was created 1st Baron Moncrieffe of Tulliebole in 1869.  The family still remains in residence at the castle and an image is shown, as is an engraving of the 8th Baronet, now in the collection of the British Museum in London

Scottish Table Baskets of this design are very rare, as the majority are English.  This piece is a wonderful example which could be used for bread, fruit or cake on the table, as well as being a beautiful, decorative, item when not in use.
