A very rare & unusual early George III Double Lipped Wine/Water Jug made in London in 1766 by George Cowles.

The Jug stands on a circular pedestal foot decorated with cording and swirl fluting. The slender main body has a baluster form and is decorated, on the lower section, with unusual linier flutes in sizes. The sides rise to an everted rim and two " sparrow beak" pouring spouts decorated with flutes and lobes, with scrolls and an applied foliate motif below. The two scroll handles are decorated with leaf capping and trailing wheat ears and are attached to the main body with stylised foliate mouldings. The Jug is in excellent condition and is well marked in the foot. This is the first time we have seen this design and as well as being used as a wine or water jug, this piece would be beautiful used as a flower vase on the table. George Cowles was apprenticed to the great Samuel Courtauld and was working from premises in Swithin's Lane when this fine piece was made.
