The Sander has a square form, with lobed sides. Each lobe is beautifully decorated with pierced bands of simulated filigree scroll work. Both the rim and base display a scalloped band pierced with roundels, which holds the side panels in place. The top displays a sunken well carved to simulate a flower head and pierced with plain roundels for the sand to come out. Inkstands did not really exist in any quantity at this date and sanders are also extremely rare. This piece is beautifully made and would have been filled from the top. This was last sold at the World famous Grosvenor House Antiques Fair in 1992. An exceptionally rare survivor from the reign of Charles II.
