The Salver stands on four shaped, pleated, cast feet. The Salver has a square form, with raised border decorated with a thread band and pleated corners. The centre of the salver is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate scroll, shell and strap work cartouche. This example is in excellent condition, has a fine colour and is very well marked on the reverse. The salver has a most exceptional weight. Grimwade states that little is known about John White and he was operating from workshops on the corner of Arundel Street, Strand, when this piece was made. He also emphasises that although his work is rare, it is almost always of high quality and Huguenot in character. He was, or must have employed, a particularly fine engraver as his Armorials, and surrounding cartouches, are executed to the finest standard.
